Homecoming Project – Mechanized Boreholes

Why this Project: The power of water

Water crisis continues to challenge St James students and teachers’ access to the quantity and quality needed for drinking, cooking, bathing, and handwashing. While there has been some progress, our school still faces water problems with students and teachers finding it difficult to get water especially during the dry season. This project is thus planned to solve or reduce the lack of access to clean water. Water connects every aspect of life. Access to safe water and sanitation can quickly turn problems into potential – empowering people with time for school and work, and contributing to improved health for women, children, and families. The water crisis is a health crisis. Nearly 1 million people die each year from water (WHO, 2023), sanitation and hygiene-related diseases which could be reduced with access to safe water or sanitation. Every 2 minutes a child dies from a water-related disease  (source WHO 2022). Access to safe water and sanitation contributes to improved health and helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases

The Plan: Two (2) Mechanized Boreholes

The executives and the entire 2004-year group have decided to tackle the water problem in St. James with support from the national union and donations from other cooperate organizations during the 20yrs homecoming in October 2024.

  • Each borehole will have 2 poly tanks on a raised platform with connected pipe extensions (4 poly tanks would be needed) or
  • Each borehole with 1 poly tank on a raised platform with connected pipe extensions (2 poly tanks would be needed)
